Ustad Rashid Khan Passes Away at 55


The musician needed ventilation assistance. After a brain attack last month, his condition worsened.


New Delhi: Prominent classical vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan passed away Wednesday afternoon, according to officials. He was receiving treatment for prostate cancer at a hospital in Kolkata.


The maestro, who passed away at the age of 55, is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. He was a member of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana and the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan.

Ustad Rashid Khan passed away at around 3:45 p.m., despite the hospital's best efforts, according to a statement from a representative of the private hospital where he was being treated, as reported by news agency PTI.


On Instagram, a number of well-known singers, including Sonu Nigam and Rekha Bhardwaj, expressed their sadness over Khan's loss.


Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, said, "This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity," expressing her profound grief at the news. I'm in a lot of pain because I still find it hard to accept Rashid Khan's passing. She went to the hospital and stood with the late singer's relatives.


Prior to Ustad Rashid Khan's final ceremonies, which are set for this Wednesday, Banerjee declared that he will receive a gun salute and state honors. After being placed in a mortuary today, his body will be transported to Rabindra Sadan on Wednesday, when fans can pay their final respects.

The performer need ventilation assistance. His condition worsened when he suffered a brain attack last month.
